Preparing for Surgery

Undergoing surgery can feel overwhelming, but good preparation helps ensure the best possible outcome. Please review the following general guidelines as you get ready for your procedure at New York Brain, Spine & Joint.

1.     Medical Clearance

  • Your primary care physician or specialist may need to provide medical clearance before your procedure.
  • Patients should be seen 2 weeks prior to surgery for their pre-op visit.
  • Please complete any required lab work, EKGs, or imaging as directed.
  • Bring a list of current medications (prescription and over the counter) to your pre-op appointment.

2.  Medications to Stop Before Surgery

  • You may be asked to stop taking:
  • Blood thinners (e.g. aspirin, Plavix, Coumadin)
  • Certain supplements (e.g. Vitamin E, fish oil, turmeric)
  • Anti-inflammatory medications (e.g. Advil, Aleve)
  • GLP-1 medications (e.g. Ozempic)
  • ACE inhibitors (antihypertensive) on day of surgery.

These medications should be suspended 7 days prior to surgery.

 Always follow the guidance given by your surgeon or pre-op nurse.

3.     Fasting Instructions

  • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before your surgery unless otherwise directed.
  • This includes water, gum, mints, and coffee.

4.     What to Bring

  • A valid ID and insurance card
  • Any paperwork or test results provided by other doctors
  • A list of current medications
  • Comfortable clothes to wear home

A responsible adult to drive you home (you will not be allowed to leave alone)

5.     General Reminders

  • Do not wear makeup, lotions, perfume, or jewellery on the day of surgery.
  • Remove contact lenses and piercings.
  • Shower the night before or morning of, using antibacterial soap if recommended.
  • If you feel sick or develop a fever, call the office immediately.
